Blackfin Snapper

Scientific name: Lutjanus buccanella

Appearance:

The blackfin snapper is generally red, with a yellowish hue on the caudal, anal, and pelvic fins. Located at the base of its pectoral fins is a distinctive and visible dark comma-shaped mark, thus giving the fish its common name. Its anal fin is rounded, and no black spot can be found on the side under its dorsal fin. Because of its red appearance, it is sometimes marketed as red snapper.

Habitat:

Adult blackfin snapper thrive offshore near the continental shelf, while the juvenile fish inhabit rocky outcroppings near reefs in shallow waters.

Florida locations:

Adult blackfin snapper live offshore near the continental shelf. Larger fish swim to deeper waters.
