History

Thousands of years ago, Daytona Beach area was inhabited by Timucuan Indians, who lived in wooden enclosed villages. The Timucuan tribe’s livelihood is through farming until the Spanish ruled all over Florida. The Native Americans suffered from infectious diseases brought by the Spanish and enslavement causing for the tribe to diminish.

The City of Daytona Beach became a winter vacation spot in the 1800s when St. John and Halifax River Railway and Florida East Coast Railway incorporated. With the advent of railroad, the town’s population grew. In 1926, the towns of Daytona Beach, Daytona and Seabreeze merged and became “Daytona Beach”. The new Daytona Beach enjoyed rapid growth and development both in economy and number of inhabitants.
