Bradenton

History

The City of Bradenton is the seat of Manatee County, Florida.

The earliest human settlement in Bradenton dates back thousands of years ago before Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto arrived at Shaw’s Point to search for El Dorado. The city was named after Dr. Joseph Braden, a sugarcane planter who settled in Bradenton in early 1850s.
During the frequent Native American attacks, Braden’s house and sugar mill served as fortress for settlers in the area.

In 1903, the town was incorporated and named Bradentown, but changed to City of Bradenton in 1943 when the cities of Manatee and Bradentown merged.

Today, Bradenton is a prime destination for water adventures and golfers.
