Orlando

History

It was believed that around 6,000 to 12,000 years ago, the Seminole tribe peopled the present Orlando. In 1837, the Europeans came, and after many wars with the native tribes, the Seminole tribe moved away. In 1838, the U.S Army built Fort Gatlin, which was located some miles from today’s downtown Orlando. Aaron Jemigan was the first to inhabit the area, thus the area was named after him at first. In 1840, a small town had been established and renamed Orlando, after Orlando Reeves, who died by an arrow after shooting a native enemy. In 1875, the city was assimilated.

During the 1880’s and 1890’s, the citrus market flourishesd, and fruit farmers came by large numbers. Orlando became the citrus industry mecca, thus making the town flourish. Housing industry flourished in the 1920’s, but the decline came when the depression and several hurricanes affected Florida. During World War II, military bases were established in Florida. The area also experienced population boom. Orlando became a tourist destination when, in 1971, Walt Disney World was opened. At present, Orlando is a highly successful city with famous tourists spots and other booming industries.
