Mosquito Lagoon

History

Bootleggers during the Prohibition Era smuggled spirits to Mosquito Lagoon even when forbidden. The Vann family was the host of many parties which lasted for many days. That place eventually became Vann’s Island. During the Civil War, the Confederate soldiers thought the Shipyard Island as a good place to repair broken vessels. Orange Island once had a grand plantation.

Getting There

Tourists can drive to Mosquito Lagoon, which is just 45 minutes from Orlando, The Kennedy Space Center, and the Port of Cape Canaveral.

Weather

Mosquito Lagoon ranges from Ponce de Leon Inlet (Volusia County) to the northern part of Merritt Island. The average summer temperature of Volusia County is 81°F, and with an average winter temperature of 61.5°F.

What to Wear

During summer months, it is advisable to wear light-colored and cool clothing, especially those made from cotton. Women can wear skirts and cool sundresses. Flip flops are definitely something to bring. If you plan to stay outdoors for longer hours, bring along a hat, a pair of shades for eye protection, and apply a generous amount of sunblock with a high SPF, applying every 2 to 3 hours.

When on business meetings, wear appropriate clothing made of light-colored and cool materials. For night outs, it is advisable to wear appropriate outfits.

During the rainy seasons, be sure to have a jacket or sweatshirt. Same goes for non-rainy days but with cooler nights.

Fishing

Welcome to Mosquito Lagoon, considered as the Redfish Capitol of the World. This lagoon and the Indian River are heaven for anglers who can experience shallow fishing all year round. Famous fishing areas include the Tiger Shoals and the Whale Tail Shoal.
